小品ながら、ベイトソンの主著というべき作品です。「人間の認識」についての諸概念を整理するという意味では、人類学や心理学のみならず、学問に携わる人すべてにとって有用と言うべき本でしょう。内容も「ニューギニア部族」「精神分裂の世界」「学習するイルカ」「パブロフの犬の実験と考察」「生物の進化」「大学の教育方針に関するメモ」等々、頁数の割りに大変盛り沢山なものとなっています。生物的、社会的事象に密着した論を展開するベイトソンの視点は、考えの基本に据えている「前提」が実に力強く、読者を引き込みます。

この本、「精神と自然」は、心と自然の関係を探求した偉大な予言の書と云える物だ。その昔、カプラのタオイズムの源流となったと云うベイトソンの自然観、世界観、認識論は、改めて、私たちにもう一度ベイトソンの全体像を把握消化する事を求めている。
これは、比較的易しい文のように思えるが、実のところ大分敷居の高い本なのだ。おそらくここに書かれている事の、真の意味と射程を理解出来る人は、多くの分野の根本問題を自分に課して考えたことがある人だけであろう。サイバネティクス、ホロニックシステム、カオス、生化学、形態発生学、非線形数学、位相幾何学、生物物理学、地球惑星科学、分子進化学、細胞生化学、精神病理学、精神分析学、免疫学、神経生理学、文化人類学、数論、民俗学、宇宙物理学、植物学、文明論、言語学など、人物で言えば、ウィーナー、チューリング、トム、ウイラード・ギッブス、マイヤーホフ、ホプキンス、セント・ジェルジ、ダーシー・トムソン、ジャック・モノー、フォン・ノイマン、グロタンデック、木村資生、ニーレンバーグ、アーサー・ケストラー、カチャルスキー、ミード、レイチェル・カースン、ビンスワンガー、フロイト、テレンバッハ、ラカン、利根川進、ユング、チャールズ・パース、ヘルマン・ワイル、レヴィ・ストロース、フッサール、ホジキン、マリノフスキー、サハロフ、ランダウ、ヴィゴッキーなど、切が無い。
読みこなせば、この本は、多くの知恵と新たな世界への窓を持つ本であろう。

「ゆでたてのカニを生物の死骸であるということを私に納得いくように説明してみなさい。」
涼宮ハルヒのような突飛な質問は、学問の発展に重要な実験だということが分かる。
何かを厳密に説明しようとすると、実は常識だと思っていたことが、ある仮説にすぎないことが分かる。
キャリブレーション（較正）とフィードバック（負帰還）のようなサイバネティックス的な着想。
ps.
レヴィストロースが文化人類学として整理したと訳注に書かれている内容は未確認。
