この本は９０年代から盛んになってきた進化心理学における現代の古典とも目されるものです。殺人行動とは「人が自らの遺伝的な利益」を追求する結果として起こるものである、という進化論的なテーマで一貫してデータを分析、未検証の仮説を提示しています。
人類学や犯罪社会学などに今もはびこる文化万能論をしきりと論駁しているのは、１９８８年という原著の時代を考えれば自然ですが、さすがに記述の古さがあります。現在はあまりに多くの進化心理学者がネオ・ダーウィニズムからの演繹的な方法を当然視・実践しているのですから。
しかし本書の思索は、犯罪学に携わる人のすべてが知るべき内容であるのは、まちがいないと思います。残念なのは、日本人研究者ではこのような理論を駆使できる学者が未だに皆無なことです。

今まで、殺人に関するデータ集積に基づく分析が全く無かった、というのが驚き。そこから出てくる分析は、従来の「心理学的｣分析を覆すものであり、「個人の心理から人間全体を演繹する｣心理学の胡散臭さをはっきりと見せつけてくれて、いたって痛快。やっぱりフロイトはもう古いでしょ。
ただ、データ分析は見事だけれども、そこから「進化心理学｣なるものが本当に出てくるかは未知数、というところ。
しかし、殺人に関するデータが人間についての何を語るか、ということだけでも、十分読むに値する驚きに満ちている。凡百のフロイト的殺人心理学に身も心も毒されてしまった人には、特に必読。
