大長編ものとして有名で、手を出してもほとんどの読者が途中で投げ出すことで有名なのが、プルーストの「失われた時を求めて」と中里介山の「大菩薩峠」ではないだろうか。「大菩薩峠」は安岡章太郎氏の「果てもない道中記」で読んだ気分に浸れたが、「失われた〜」となると難作で、フランスコミック版は絵がとてもきれいで雰囲気もいいのだが、未だ２巻までしか出版されていない。今回この本によって全体像をつかめたことは大いに参考になった。

しかし、最後に主人公が「私もまた時に逆らうことなく老いていたのだ！」と泣いたように、今の私には原作に挑戦する時間も気力もないことを悟らされた。感性が豊かで時間とエネルギーを持て余す年代の方に原作への挑戦をお勧めしたい。

「失われた時を求めて」については、新潮社の単行本でまず挫折、ちくま文庫でも挫折、集英社の抄訳版ですら挫折したのだが、この漫画は一気に読破できた。このシリーズで評判がいい「蟹工船」や「カラマーゾフの兄弟」と同等かそれ以上の面白さなので、安心して買ってください。まあ、原作のストーリーがもともとキャッチーなんだろう。「ユリシーズ」も今日読んだが、こちらは原作を読むための準備体操として使える程度。私が原作を通読してるからそう思うのかもしれないが・・・。客観的には「失われた時を求めて」よりも「ユリシーズ」のほうが難解だが、登場人物が貧乏人だと私には読みやすくなる。

今まで幾度となく挑戦しては途中で挫折してきた一書でしたが、マンガで簡潔に描かれた本書は、一気に読了できた。図書館で分厚い『失われた時を求めて』を何度も借りては、途中で読むのをやめたり、返却期限が過ぎたりしてダメ。意を決して、ちくま文庫の十冊セットを購入したが、そのまま本棚でホコリをかぶっている状態だった。それが、このマンガ版があるのを知って、初めて最後まで通してストーリーと大要を把握することが出来た。マンガの絵は、少女マンガ風ではあるものの、さほど極端ではないので、男女どちらでも読むことができると思う。本棚に眠っていた、長編のほうを、ひっぱりだして、読み始めたところです。今度は挫折しないでいけそうです。
