加藤 周一
1919年9月19日、東京に生まれる。東京帝国大学医学部で血液学を専攻。医学博士。幼少から読書に親しみ、フランス文学や日本の古典文学に深い関心を寄せる。学生時代に中村真一郎、福永武彦らと「マチネ・ポエティック」を結成、押韻の定型詩を創る。戦後、留学生として渡仏し、医学研究のかたわら西欧各国の文化を摂取したことが、日本文化の特徴を考えるきっかけとなる。和漢洋の幅広い教養と繊細な感性をもって、評論・創作活動に従事。日本の文学・思想・美術の歴史を世界的視野から見つめる態度は、労作『日本文学史序説』(大佛次郎賞)を生んだ。カナダ、ドイツ、スイス、アメリカ、イギリス、イタリアなどの大学や、上智大学、立命館大学で教鞭をとる(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

まさに補講。五つの講を通して、原書「日本文学史序説」の理解を深めるために有効な論を、参加した読者の質問に答えつつ、著者の加藤さんが展開してくれました。著者が、いろいろな箇所で何を考え、どんなことをねらって書いたか、原書には書かれていないことを興味深く紹介してくれます。

例えば、「文学」をなぜ、どのように広くとらえたか。原書の題にある日本・文学・史のそれぞれをどう考えたか。源氏物語のすごさはどこにあるか。新井白石、本居宣長、福沢諭吉などになぜ注目するか。近代文学が、第４の転換期ということでなぜあんなに簡略にされてしまったか、等々。また、日本古来のものを知るのに、例えば、外来文化に影響されて変化して目の前に現象しているものを、それに影響をあたえたおおもとの外来文化を手がかりにしてベクトル分解して知ろうとした、という図入りの解説などは、加藤さんの面目躍如。自然科学にも通じた広い視野・視点と独創性に感服です。新たな納得の連続です。

この本のもとになった信州・追分の初秋の学習会がどんなにか知的刺激にあふれ、楽しく充実したものであったか。まえがきやあとがきによると裏話、日本の現在に関する議論なども別にあったという。本書で、それらの息吹をいくらかなりとも感じつつ原書の魅力に今一度接してみませんか。
