作者的にはシリーズ物のつもりではなかった、
と巻末のオマケに書かれていますが

管理官の２人が、この世界をまとめているので
そういう括りも、まあよしとして、いいのではなかろうか

どんどん積み上がっていく都市と
地下に住み着いている人達とのお話。
（簡単にまとめ過ぎか？）

この作者の作品は読後に
言いようのない、「やるせなさ」が残るのが
結構、クセになる。

どうにもならない事なのだが
本人たちのなかでは、どうにかなっている。

他人は、全く手を出すことができない
それぞれの人生。

そんな、物語。

愛がテーマなのかな？と思いました。

いろんな「愛し方」が出てきます。過去をも支配しようとしたり、自分からの接触・介入ができなかったり、想いを言葉で伝えることができなかったり、直接肉体を求めたり…。
世間一般で理想とされる愛し方は一つもありませんが、その一つ一つの物語の余韻みたいなものが心の中に静かに染み渡っていくようで、とてもよかったです。

ダークな作品が多い鬼頭さんですがこの短編集は全体にしんみりとしてます。
物足りなく思う人も多いかもしれませんがわたしは結構気に入りました。
