サッカーのメッカであり、紋章のメッカであるヨーロッパ。この2つに興味があったので迷わず購入したわけだが、期待を裏切らない内容。
なんでフランス代表のエンブレムは雄鶏なのか？
なんでマンチェスター・ユナイテッドは「赤い悪魔」と呼ばれるのか？
なんでスペインのクラブチームのエンブレムの多くには王冠がかぶせられているのか？
などなど、小さなエンブレムに込められた大きなストーリーは、サッカーを違った角度から楽しめる。単にブランド・マーケティングの道具ではないのである。
ちなみに、世界広しと言え、家系をあらわすマーク＝紋章と言う文化があるのは、ヨーロッパのほかには日本の家紋だけなのだそうだ。そういった点でも、サッカーのエンブレムには親近感が湧いてくる

ヨーロッパのサッカーを観ていると、選手たちがそのクラブの歴史、その街の歴史を背負って、戦っているんだなあと感じます。この本を読めば、その歴史の一端に触れることが出来るし、地域密着を目指すこれからの日本のスポーツシーンにも、大いに参考になるのでは？ヨーロッパのサッカー観戦には、常に傍らにおいて置きたい一冊。第2弾・第3弾が出るのを期待します！

サッカー史が好きな人にはオススメの一冊。個人的には、
・アルファロメオとミラン＆インテルの関係。
・ビルバオ(ESP)とサンダーランド(ENG)のユニは何故似てるのか。
・ポルトのスタジアムがドラゴンと呼ばれる由来。
などが、グッときました。これで南米が載ってれば満点ですね。
