読み始めて、「あれっ」と思わされる。タイトルと内容のイメージが合わないからだ。歴史ゆかしき場所を自転車で訪れた場合のその土地土地の良さとかについて書かれているのかな、と思いきや著者の歴史観に圧倒される。
元々私も自転車好きが講じて著者の本を数冊読んでいるが、全く趣が違った。
その場所ごとでの著者の造詣の深さと言うか知識には驚かされる。で、フムフムと言う感じでぐいぐい引き込まされる。写真もイメージを拡大してくれて読破感が結構大きかった。
約３２０ページ。歴史本というよりはエッセイ風に読んだほうが好印象です。

自転車エッセイストとして有名な疋田氏だからタイトルに「自転車」と入っているだけで、実のところこの本の中では、自転車は手段であるに過ぎない。主役は日本の歴史だ。だが、平易で読みやすい疋田節は相変わらずで、誰かも書いていたが、謎掛けがうまいのでグイグイと引き込まれていく。面白かった。自転車好きだけが読むのはもったいない気がした。結構なボリュームで、読み終えるとちょっと賢くなった気がする。疋田氏の本はこれで７冊目になるのだそうだが、彼は本当は、最初からこれが書きたかったのではないだろうか。

実に面白かった。現地に行くと（特に自転車で行くと）歴史というものはこんなに見えてくるものかと思った。津山や小笠原諸島や第二海堡など、普通の教科書には出てこない埋もれた歴史が発掘されるのもいい。函館・新撰組の「碧血碑」、会津・白虎隊の「約束の地」、赤穂・忠臣蔵の「帰らない旅」にはちょっと泣けた。内容は深く、著者の知識の量には圧倒される。通り一遍の取材でないことがよく分かる。疋田氏が必ず独自の歴史解釈をしているのも面白かった。

虐げられる人民とか、悲惨な戦争とか、ステレオタイプじゃないのがいいね。
中韓についてはどっちつかずだが、TBSに勤める著者としてはここが限界か。
