Firefox と Thunderbird の入門書です。通称「白本」。「乗り換え＆拡張機能ガイド」というタイトルに忠実な内容です。乗り換え手順と基本操作、定番の拡張機能をていねいに押さえており、全メニュー図解など初心者にはありがたい付録つき。

既に乗り換えてバリバリ使っている方には物足りないのではないかと思います。また「Mac や Linux の利用者にも役立つ」という触れ込みになっていますが、それはソフトウェアの基本操作と拡張機能に関する部分の話。乗り換えの解説は、Windows で IE と OE を使っている方が主要な対象読者層です。

既に Firefox に触れている方の場合、初心者レベルなら本書が親切です。しかしある程度の使用経験があるなら、Thunderbird の入門記事が不要であれば、「Mozilla Firefox完全攻略ガイド」（通称「黒本」）との比較検討を勧めます。

タイトルは Firefox ですが、中身の半分は Thunderbird に割かれていて、Thunderbird に興味の無い人にとっては損した気分になるかもしれません。Firefox だけの情報が欲しい人はライバルのインプレスの「Mozilla Firefox 完全攻略ガイド」の方が良いかも。

内容的にはインストールや設定の移行を含めた導入部分、タブブラウザなどの基本的な使い方を含む基本機能部分、拡張やテーマのインストール方法、about:config や CSS によるカスタマイズまでを説明するカスタマイズ部に分かれており、入門書としては十分なレベルでしょう。さらに、100を超える拡張機能がカテゴリごとに約40ページを費やして紹介されており、やはり Firefox の最大の売りは拡張機能なんだなと感じます。

拡張機能に関しては、All-In-One Gestures、Tabbrowser Preferences、タブブラウザ拡張、Configuration Mania などが大きく取り上がられており妥当なところでしょうか。数を優先したためか、説明は少なめです。Tab Mix もぎりぎりのところで掲載が間に合ったようです。ただし、Thunderbird の拡張に Enigmail が無いのはいただけません。

初心者の方がこれからFirefoxを使ってみたいなという時にピッタリな本だと思います。
逆にすでに使っている方や、ある程度PCの操作に慣れている方には物足りないと思います。
私はすでにFirefoxとThunderbirdを使用していますが、特に目新しい情報を得ることはありませんでした。

FirefoxとThunderbirdに関してインストールから使用方法、拡張機能のインストールまで詳しく書かれているので、
これから使ってみたいという初心者の方にはいいでしょう。
どの情報も少しネットで調べればわかることばかりです。
しかし、そういう情報が１冊の本にわかりやすく書かれているという点では評価できると思います。
