深海探査とか地底探険とか、未知の「底」を覗く行為には、意味なく好奇心を掻き立てられます。

雑誌書評や本オビを見て上下まとめて購入しました。
トンネルの奥に存在する、人知を超えた地下の世界。
文句なしの着眼点や、華々しい売り文句に期待…し過ぎてしまいました。不満をいくつか。

まず“地下”らしさに欠ける。
自分個人の認識不足とは思いますが、地下ならではの閉塞感なり魅力なりの想像に、言葉が追い付いてない気がしました。

あと“人物”。
皆が懸命なイイ子イイ人である必要はないのですが、それを差し引いても愉快とは言えない自己主張(別名・手前勝手)の多さ。
無理無茶無謀もキャラに可愛げがあってこそ、それも美徳!と受け入れられるのでしょうが。
そんな連中による差別や暴力描写に、一体何のフォローを見いだせっていうんだか。

続編を同じ金額払って読みたいかといえば、「はい」ではないです。

地下世界で明かされた秘密、逃亡、救出、裏切り、犠牲・・・。トンネルのようにどこまでも絶望的な暗さがある。読んでも読んでもちょっと明るくなったと思うと、また暗い展開になる。上巻を読み始めた時は子供向けだと思っていた。でも読んでくうちに小学生には重過ぎるのでは？と思えてきた。下巻は特に覚悟して読んだほうがいい。後半、泣けるシーンはあった。でもその後もあんまり明るくなくて、正直、続編出してくれ！と言いたい。これで終わりじゃ謎も残ってスッキリしないし、これじゃホラーだよ。その先の希望をもっと持たせてほしい。
下巻は展開が気になって読む手が止まらなかった。つまらない本ではないと思う。最初は不満があったけど、夢中になって読みました。ただ、ニコニコ読める本ではなく、物語の終わりがハッピーエンドでなければダメな人にはおススメしない。

突然、行方不明になった父を探して地下世界にたどり着いたウィルとチェスター。そこでは、彼らの想像を絶する苦しみが待ち構えていた

上巻では物理的な暗さが際立ったが、下巻はそれに加え、心理的な暗さが重くのしかかる。身近な人が傷ついたり、亡くなったりと、血なまぐささと痛みが絶えない展開である。

この本は、読者に彼らの探検の結論を与えず、続編を期待させる一文でしめくくられる。

結局、彼らはどうなったのか？あれこれと想像をしてみるのも楽しいが、やはり作者の用意している結論を知りたい。
