Tully's Picture Book Award 2003の最優秀作品受賞作が絵本となった。

企業の主催する絵本コンペはいくつかありますが、このコンペのユニークな
ところは、タリーズコーヒーに来店したお客さんが審査に加わっているところ。
多くの読者の支持によって生まれたということでは意味があるかもしれませんネ。

ただ、本作はオリジナリティという点で物足りなさを感じました。

切り紙による表現や、次々に食べ物を求めていく話しの展開は、
エリック・カールの名作『はらぺこあおむし』を連想させてしまうのだ。

もっと気になったのは、冒頭で自分の白い姿を嫌っているひつじ君に素直に
共感できなかったところだ。他の動物と色が違うというだけでは…理由として弱い。
このあたりは、PHP研究所刊『かっこわるいよ!　だいふくくん』
と読み比べてみるといいでしょう。

やがて、ひつじ君は女の子と出会い、自分の魅力に気付かされるのですが、
そこが言葉による説明に頼っていて、ちょっとくどかった。
ひつじ君ならではのモコモコした毛触りの魅力を、感覚的に伝える
エピソードがあれば、もっと絵本的な魅力が出ただけに残念。

などと書きましたが、初めての絵本でここまでまとめたところは評価したい。
