描かれているのは、ひとりの女性といっぴきのクマの、ひと夏の交流。
そして、ふたりを結びつけているのは、物語の朗読という行為のみ。
クマの性別を示す記述はないし、恋や愛といった言葉はひとつも出てきません。

それにもかかわらず、恋愛感情をしっかりと読者に想起させてくれるのは、
作者の力量が成せる技と感服しました。

ポイントはクマという動物の特徴を、最大限に引き出したところでしょう。
つまりそれは、人間の大きさに近い図体をもちながら、どこか不器用で
それでいて思索的な雰囲気を醸し出しているところにあると言えます。

クマを他の動物、例えば猫とかリスとかに置き換えてみると明らかです。
同じ物語を描いても全く別の意味合いが出てきます。

何が書かれているかも分からないまま取っておいた古い手紙の一部に託して、
女性へ想いを伝えようとするクマは、ただただ切ないばかり。

恋という言葉がこの世に生まれる前の純粋な心の響きを、ぜひ感じてください。
ジム・ラマルシェによる夕焼け色に火照ったクマの描写も見事です！

言葉の通じない筈のクマと女性が「読書」を通して心を通わせてゆく。
なんともゴージャスな休暇の時間。ため息でちゃう。

非常に満ち足りた、大人向けな絵本。

人生の徒然の時代ごとに、かけがえのない「愛し方」がある。
それが恋だということにさえ気づかない「恋に恋する」感触は、
どんなに憧れても、もう二度と戻らない。
でも、日々のパンを食べるように、深呼吸するように愛する感触もまた、
長い年月を経た今だから、やっと味わえるのだ。

この本は、オトナになったら読んでください。自分で「もうオトナだ」と思えた時が、読みごろでしょう。
若い恋を、もう、丸ごと身体で味わえない代わりに、
今はもう熱く夢見るしかない代わりに、
オトナはこんな物語を心から抱きしめることが出来るのです。
