児童書？の位置づけながら、意外に深いテーマ設定に大人でも引き込まれる名作です。これだけ実力のある作家はもっと脚光を浴びてもいいはずなのに…。独特の世界にぜひ飛び込んでください。

絵画をもとにして物語が描かれているからでしょうか、読みながら、読んだ後も本の中の世界を鮮明に思い描くことができました。しかし、研ぎ澄まされた気持ちになるのは視覚的な部分だけではなく、聴覚もでした。鳥の鳴き声や自転車の音、いつまでも心に響きます。そのためか、物語の終わりが光の中へ薄れて消えていくような感覚も手伝って、読み終えた後は不思議な気持ちになりました。いつまでも余韻が残ります。

　女の子たちの話し声は、何故だか小鳥の鳴き声に聞えることがある。
　それはまだ未成熟の、しかも女の子たちだけが発することが出来る特別なものではないだろうか。何の疑いも持たず、日々を送る。少しずつ閉じ込められながら、まるで鳥籠の小鳥のように。

　それでもいつかはその籠を飛び立つ時はくる。閉じこもることは心地よい毛布に包まることに似ている。いつしかその中にいることを、当たり前のように思いはじめるかもしれない。けれど、出て行くのだ。自分を信じて。

　児童書というと何故だかスルーされることがままあるけれど、これはちょっと違うものだと思う。確かにファンタジーのお約束とも思えるような舞台（修道院学校、塔、日本名でない主人公達…）だけれど、それだけに留まらないのだ。よく作りこんであると感じる。物語の始まりだけが”本当の始まり”ではないのだ。
