ハシやんは大学の客員教授などもしていましたが、あまり戦争の話はしたくないといっていました。『死』が日常から遠ざかってしまった日本では、特に若い人に話をしても理解しがたいから、といっていました。戦争はいつも政治が原因で、犠牲になるのは一般の人たちです。戦争の現場に行くたびに、人間が如何にアホか良くわかるといっていました。本書は面白おかしく書いていますが、２年程前にまじめな文体で書いた『戦場特派員』もお勧めですので、ぜひ読んでみてください。今回の事件は残念ではありましたが、これを機にハシやんの本が多くの人に読まれ、彼の思いが一人にでも多くの方に伝わればすばらしいと思います。（この中で本書が勝谷氏の手によるもの、と書いている人がいますが、ハシやんはいつも自分で書いていました。）

61才の現役「戦場特派員」橋田さんの奮戦記。とにかくバグダッドに入るために、そしてまた、撮った映像をなんとか日本に送るために、たった二人組の「アイアンシルバー」フリージャーナリストたちは、あの手この手で柔軟に進んでいく。ユーモアたっぷりのおもしろさの中に、鋭い批判が入るのは、ベトナム戦争からずっと戦場を取材してきた豊かな経験から。そのお人柄から不思議と元気の出る戦場ドキュメントでもある。

不肖・宮嶋の上官といわれる橋田信介氏のイラク戦争取材記。
ベトナムを始め湾岸戦争、カンボジアの内戦、ボスニア内戦、アフガン戦争などの戦場を、
フリージャーナリストとして撮影し続けてきた人の過酷な体験とはうらはらな、
ぽわんとした文体で綴られるイラク戦争は、平和な日本に住む私の後ろ頭を直撃してくれました。

戦場の現実を淡々と描写していく文章は、戦場という場を見た人ならではのものです。
61歳の現役カメラマン、橋田信介氏の仕事は平和に慣れきった日本人にぜひ知ってほしい。
