出版社からのコメント
本作品は原作者の「まえがき」にもあるとおり、当初は三部構成の予定で連載が始まった。第一部「パゴス島編」は1967年42号から68年27号、第二部「特攻編」は68年42号から69年19号までの連載となっている。第三部「本土決戦編」は、若木書房版の「まえがき」にはこう書かれている。
編集部の都合で第二部完結となっていたが、読者の声援も多く二年ぶりにペンを執った。この「本土決戦編」の完結を機に、若木書房から全巻揃って刊行されることになった、と。
だが、第二部完結の２年後、1971年当時の「少年サンデー」誌上に連載の形跡はない。原作者・著者ともに故人のため確認がとれていない。
原作者・相良俊輔は、同じく作画家・園田光慶と組んで同誌にボクシング漫画「軍鶏」を70年48号から52号まで連載している。
