表紙が反射する綺麗な白色なので高級な感じがしますね。
カバーを外した本体は濃い青色をしていて、「矛盾」について商人の立場から語るおまけ話が書かれています。
横幅は丁度1.5ｃｍ、高さも18ｃｍとコンパクトな大きさなので一般的な本棚にも違和感無く収納できると思います。

１ページにつき一つずつ、左側に武器の解説、右側にイラストが載ってます。古今東西の剣、槍、意思の宿る武器からガンソードなどRPG風のものまで
合計で101種類もの多種多様な武器が解説されています。
解説の内容も短すぎず長すぎず、いつ頃の武器なのか、どうやってつかうのか、など武器の応用も交えた説明をしていて、
例えば剣以外の武器の携帯方法や、クロスボウの矢の装填の仕方、短剣の逆手持ちは見た目はかっこいいが失敗すると危険、両手剣の振り下ろし攻撃のリスクなど、
気軽な文体でまるで実戦を意識しているかのようなギャップが面白い。

それがこの本の魅力でもあるのですが、逆にそれが星4個にした理由でもあります。
武器自体の解説なのか、それとも武器の応用の解説なのか、が明確な線引きがされずに混同しているため所々中ぶらりんな感じがあり、
私以外で星4個にした方も同じようなことを感じたのではないでしょうか。

また題名にも書いたとおり、私はゲームに登場するような武器屋の武器イラスト一覧なものを期待して本書を購入したんですが、この本のイラストは
色が付いてなく、あくまで見本程度に留まっているのも個人的には残念な点でした。
古今東西の武器の基礎知識を身につけるためなら最適かもしれませんが、
私のように解説はいらないから武器の写真集だけ欲しいと思っている方は、少しものたりないと感じるかもしれません。
もう一つ、各武器ごとに時代も記されてるんですが、武器の年表や使用されていた地図をつけて欲しかったです。

ハンドブックサイズでページ数も辞書としては少なめながら、
多彩な武器の紹介は当然として、それを扱うために必要な
能力や入手方法の考察、果ては実戦的な使用法まで。
コンパクトでありながら、驚くほど見事にまとまった一冊です。
価格から考えても、簡易な資料として最高の一冊かと！（＞ω＜
…某萌えなんとかを買うくらいなら、とりあえずこれを抑えて頂きたい（苦笑

なお辞典として高度にまとまりながら、随所で遊び心も忘れていないのが素晴らしい。
「武装メイドの存在意義とその必要性」というコラムや、
第４章「特殊な武器」に至ってはパイルバンカーやドリルまで解説されていて大ウケでした（笑
それと巻末の関連用語の「か」行…そうか、アレも「武器」だったんですねぇ…。

例えば、剣といえば切れ味鋭いもので、スパッと切断するもの……なんて思っていたが、半分間違っていることなどがわかった。
西洋の剣は、基本的に刃の鋭さで切断するものでなくて、重さと丈夫さ勝負だと。確かに、言われてみれば、西洋騎士の全身鎧なんか相手に、日本刀だの、中東系の曲刀なんかで切りつけていったら、刃こぼれして終了〜！です。ブロードソード等武器を相手にしてもまたしかり。

ゲームやら、小説やら漫画やらで培われた、架空のイメージではなく、実際問題現実的なお話がよくわかった。
