偏りのない観点から書かれた文章から、当時の実情を窺うことができます。
メイドだけでなく、「使用人」を取り巻いていた環境、社会、政治に関する解説もされているため、発見がたくさんありました。

役職ごとに特に『要求された特質や個性』の解説には、
使用人として生きた、雇い主として生きた沢山の人々の人生が感じられます。
これを読んでみると、映画や娯楽が「ああ、だからか…！」と解るようになって、
以前よりも楽しめるようになること請け合い。

題名に「図解」とありますが、思ったよりメイドの服飾・道具に関する
厳密な言及や、イラストのバリエーションは少なめでした。
そういった意味で、具体的な絵や写真による資料をお探しの場合は、
他を当たったほうがいいかも知れません。


知識・教養の一環として、話のタネに、
あるいは創作のネタや足がかりとしては、優秀な本です。

タイトルからオタク向けを想像してしまう方もいるとは思いますが、この本は『メイド』や『執事』といった使用人の職業について真面目に知るための本です。
また、タイトルには『メイド』とあるものの、『執事』など男性使用人についても書かれているので、好きな人は是非とも。
　主に…
・使用人のなりたちや、その歴史
・使用人の種類や仕事内容
・雇用主や、その周囲の人々
・使用人の生活
・使用人の雑学
について書かれています。
全体的に見やすく、わかりやすく書かれています。しかし、なおかつマニアックな内容までつっこんでいるので、暇つぶしの読み物としてもかなり良質だと言えます。
図説とあるだけあって、全項目に図説があります。なかでも使用人の服装についての図説は、創作活動をしている方には、とてもありがたいものかと思います。
索引もついているので調べたいことがあったらすぐにひけるので便利です。

真面目にメイドについて知りたい人にも、創作活動でいい参考書を探してる人にも、暇つぶしの本を探している人にもおすすめな一冊です！

　メイドと言えば、華やかな上流階級に仕える人達と言うイメージだがこの本は実際はそうではないと教えてくれる。
　メイドの成立としてヴィクトリア朝時代の解説なども含まれている。
メイドを雇う側の背景、雇われる側の背景なども事細かに書かれており、不満はないだろう。

　あと執事や従者についても解説されている。
そういう関連で読んでも良いと思った。
