wordfreqというスクリプトの例があります。

私は今でも、このスクリプトで単語を計算しています。

必要に応じてTRコマンドと併用したり、除去する記号を変更したりしています。

最近ではPerlやrubyが一般的になって、awkも影がうすいようです。確かに機能の点からみたら劣りますが、awkをただの1行処理のスクリプト言語だと思っている人はこの本の内容を見たらびっくりするでしょうね。簡単なアセンブラをつくったり、各種のアルゴリズムの実験までしてしまうのですから。その理由は「どんなねらいでawkをつくったか」が書かれている序文を読むとわかります。以前アジソンウェスレイ・トッパンから出版されていた本です。しばらく絶版状態だったのが無事復活して本当にうれしく思います。

4.0 out of 5 stars むしろ現場である程度の時間を過ごした人へ。, 2005/5/18
トッパン→シエエム・シイ→新紀元社、と流浪する邦訳本です(新紀元社はいろいろ面白い本を出しています)。売れてない一方で、この本の価値を認める人々が熱烈に支持しているのでしょう。初心者向けの本ではありません。なんで?
たとえば、複数行にわたるプログラムのコードを解析して小さいとはいえちゃんと機能するプログラミング言語のインタプリタを AWK で書ける、ということに驚き、でも実は引用符の処理が適当なことに苦笑するには、自分で「パーザ」を書こうとして苦しんだ経験が必要でしょう。AWK は制限だらけの言語ですが、その制限のかなりの部分はむしろ普通の手続き型言語とは違うものを作ろう、もっと言えば yacc のインタプリタ版、すなわち「コンパイラ・インタプリタ」を作ろう、という無謀な志から来ています(成功したとは言いがたい)。
Perl は AWK から正規表現演算子をパクって大ヒットさせ、他にも AWK のなしえなかった成功を収めましたが、AWK が世に問うたテキストデータベースの思想は UNIX の衰退とともに廃れ、後継者を得ていません。
この著者たちの書いた本の中では『UNIXプログラミング環境』や『プログラミング作法』の前段というより、むしろ『ソフトウェア作法』、ひょっとすると『ドラゴンブック』とさえ並べて論じるべきものでしょう。
(2006/01/17追記)なお、AWK 初心者には『AWKを256倍使うための本』がおすすめです。少し古い GNU awk の MS-DOS 用日本語移植版に拠って記述しているので現代の Linux ユーザーにはぴんとこない部分が若干ありますが、これを読めばすぐに使い始めることができるでしょう。
