ドラゴンはかくも人気の幻想生物です。
その歴史も多様で、ほぼ世界中に神話が存在します。
この本はファーブニル、ヒュドラ、ヤマタノオロチといった世界各国の代表的なドラゴン、ムシュフシュやイルルヤンカシェといったちょっとマイナーなドラゴン、果てはロードス島戦記、ネバーエンディングストーリー、ゴジラなどの創作作品に登場するものまで幅広く網羅しておりＧＯＯＤです。

記述も判りやすく、詳しいのでドラゴンの神話に興味を持ち、調べたいと思ったら一番にお勧めできる一冊です。
イラストも豊富なので、竜好きは要チェック！

ただ問題は中国系が弱い・・・
最高位の龍である応龍が一行・・・翼がある龍としか書いてない。
季節の運行を司る竜神、燭陰なども収録されていない。
など中国系の龍は少ししか収録されていないのが残念なところ。
できるならそれらを収録した２を刊行してもらいたいものだ。

時代や地域の枠組みを超えたドラゴン解説書。
古くは紀元前の伝承から、新しいものではル＝グウィンの「Earthsea」やハリウッド映画「ドラゴンハート」にまで触れている。
各ドラゴンが生まれた時代背景、及び思想背景についての考察はとても面白い。

しかし、間口の広さに反して情報は偏りがち。
西洋に比べてオリエントが弱いし、全体を占める挿絵の比率が高い。
資料や参考書としてはやや不足気味だ。
そういった方面をお求めであれば、｢幻獣ドラゴン｣をお勧めしたいところ。

心理学者が着目するほど人間の精神面と深い関わりを持つ存在、竜。
その奥深さの一端を本書で感じてみては如何だろうか。

この路線はなかなかいいですねえ。エソテリカみたいに浅く広く編集している。ヨルムンガルドや伏羲、果てはゴジラまで！興味本位に、読み物として読むといいです。
