好評だった『MacOS9実践活用ブック』の著者による、MacOS Xの解説書。これまでのMacOSとの違いはいろいろあるが、重要なのは、MacOS9.1までは不可能だった「完全なメモリ保護」を可能にした点にある。ほかにも、MacOS Xで新たに加わった機能を、これまでのOSと比較しつつ述べられている。新しく登場した「Darwin（ダーウィン）」はMacOSの「システム」、「Dock（ドック）」は「ランチャー」など、既存のMacOSユーザーに親切な比較解説が試みられている。もちろん、新しいGUIのためのしくみである「Aqua（アクア）」についての説明もある。
本書には、Part1のChapter1~2で基本的な機能の説明とインストール、セットアップの方法が、Chapter3からは基本操作方法が掲載されている。Part2の「システム探究篇」では、カスタマイズの方法やシステムの内側、トラブル対策などが解説されている。ここではMacのアプリケーションを外部から自動操作できるスクリプト言語「AppleScript」についても若干触れられている。そして最後のPart3では、付属アプリケーションや、開発環境について説明されている。
本書は全部で423ページ。基本操作を押さえるには申し分ないボリュームと内容だ。これ1冊あれば、ユーザーレベルで触れられるMacOS Xのほとんどの機能を知ることができるだろう。（土井英司）
