HTML と CSS の中級者向けリファレンスです。入門的記事は巻末に申し訳程度に添えられているのみで、冒頭からバリバリ項目が並びます。フルカラーでページが多く文字も小さめ、それでいて類書と値段が同等以下ですから、たいへんお得な感じはします。ページが多いのは、項目の立て方が細かく、また比較的まとまった分量のサンプルを紹介しているからです。

私は本書を勧めません。解説に難があるからです。著者は align 属性と text-align プロパティを並列に紹介します。div 要素と p 要素をまとめて紹介し、違いは前後の1行空きの有無（だけ）、と説明します。なぜ「同じ」結果を得る手法が複数あるのか、著者は解説しません。こうして本質的な理解を欠けば、必然的に文書の作成は非効率になります。そのことは本書のサンプルと著者の Web サイトのソースを見れば明らかです。単純な用語の間違いも散見されます。著者はもう少し仕様書を尊重すべきでした。

HTML と CSS を「主要な視覚系ブラウザのデフォルトスタイルによる表示結果」という皮相な観点から再整理した本書は、読者に「違う」ものを「同じ」と誤認識させます。わかりいいのは上辺だけで、これは結局、非効率の元凶となります。易しく正しい入門書「HTMLとスタイルシートによる最新Webサイト作成術」と「プチリファレンスHTML」を私はお勧めします。

　辞典と銘打っただけあって、内容が充実しているだけではなく、インデックスなども目的や用途別に整理されているので、とても使いやすいと感じました。

　本文は、用法→書式→文例→応用例→実際の画面表示例（I.E.とNetscapeそれぞれに）、という風になっており、対応バージョンも全てのタグやオプションごとに細かく記載されています。カラー表示も一目で内容が把握できるように工夫されています。

　余分な解説が無いので一見難しいように感じるかも知れませんが、見やすく整理されているので、初心者にも使いやすいと思いました。
　WINとMacの違いはもちろんのこと、Netscape Navigator、Internet Explorer、他１０種類余のブラウザの表現の違いについても記載されているなど、至れり尽くせりの内容です。私には、各ブラウザのバージョンごとのバグ一覧表がとても重宝しています。

　手書きでホームページを製作するのでしたら、強力におススメの一冊です。

全体的に必要なことをよくまとめているといった感じです。ですが、初心者にはちょいと読み応えありすぎ。うまい例えでいうと、学校で先ず買わされる英文法の辞典のよう。もう全部知ってるよ、というひとが、あれなんだっけ？と調べ物をする専用ですね
