リジリアンスとは「人生の初期に苦しめられた困難から回復する力」のことです。困難な家庭環境や親子関係を生き長らえて大人になった「サバイバー」たちの、心の傷（心的外傷）ではなく、むしろ心の回復力や抵抗力、創造力に焦点を合わせていこうとするわけです。喩えて言うなら、小石を呑み込んでしまった真珠貝が、それを核として美しい真珠を生み出すのに近いかもしれません。同じ困難や苦しみを与えられて、つぶれてしまったり傷に圧倒されてしまう人たちがいる一方で、そうした逆境を跳ね除けて、普通の人以上に立派な成長を遂げる人たちもいます。では、いったい何が両者のあいだの違いを生み出すのでしょうか？　リジリアンス研究は、まさにその点に注目したものだと言えるでしょう。

　クライアントが悲惨な家庭環境や親子関係を経験したということを確認し、その悩みや苦しみを再体験し、抑圧された感情を解放することも確かに大事なことかもしれません。しかし、それは物事の半面に過ぎず、そうした状況を克服して現在に至ることのできた原動力を見落とすわけにはいかないのです。そして、いま現在に直面している困難や苦しみを乗り越える力は、過去の心の傷を明らかにして、原因や問題を明らかにすること自体からではなく、その状況のなかで発揮されたクライアントの底力を再発見し、いまここでその力に繋がり直すことによってこそ生まれるのです。こうした観点を提供し、リジリアンスの具体的な姿を提示してくれる点で、本書は貴重だと思います。

　トラウマ・逆境などの言葉がメディアにより、多く取り扱われているが、いたずらに「傷つく事」と「傷による後遺症」にばかり焦点を当てているのではないだろうか？そう言う意味で、この本は、傷から脱出した/しようとしている先駆者に焦点を当てる事で、非常に教育的でかつ、それを求める者にとって力強いメッセージ性を持っていると思う。

　しかしながら、感情を吐露した言葉を訳している点や、文化の差といった障壁により、多少読むに苦しむ所がある。また、知識の無い物にとって理解し難い流れもある。
