　2005年3月31日までに合併を申請した自治体に時限付きで地方財源を優遇する、という施策が効果を発揮し、合併する自治体が続出しました。本書は、この「平成の市町村大合併」で市町村の名前がどう変わるかということを地図で示した、とてもシンプルな本です。
　ふだん地図を見る機会の少ない私ですが、市町村名を記載しているだけの地図をこんなにワクワクしながら読むとは思いませんでした。

　まず気になるのは、自分のふるさとです。
　北海道の訓子府（くんねっぷ）町は……、えっ、となり町の置戸（おけと）町と合併して訓子府町の名前は無くなっちゃうの！　ショック！
　なんだか故郷がなくなってしまうような気がしますねぇ。
　それにしても、この道東の合併はすさまじいです。北見市と釧路市が拡大した結果、なんと太平洋岸の（新）釧路市とオホーツク海に面した（新）北見市が隣接するんですよ！　それに、東知床市（羅臼町と中標津町が合併）は、間に標津町が入っています。飛び地にしてはちょっと大きすぎない？

　そうそう、「南セントレア市」の名前が住民に不評だった愛知県美浜町と南知多町の合併は、その後の住民アンケートで合併そのものが白紙撤回になったはずだけど……、えっ、何も載ってないの。合併協議が不調に終わった自治体もきちんと載っているのに、このケースだけは載っていないのかぁ。これは編集部の配慮だな。間違いない！

　他にも、明治１２年（1899年）には堺県なんていう県を含めても３府３６県しか無かったことをこの本で知りました。北海道は開拓使の直轄だったと聞いたことがありますが、その後、富山県・福井県・奈良県・島根県・徳島県・香川県・佐賀県・宮崎県が分割してできたことが分かります。

　他にも、見ているだけで「へ~」が続出しそうです。自分の住んでいる地域やふるさとを見るだけでも買う価値があります。

県名はもちろん市（町村）名に至るまで誤字（誤植とおもわれるが）が多すぎる。
合併前の旧境界から新しい市の境界の両方が載っていてわかりやすくなっているのに誤字のために非常に残念だ。
人口などのデーターも詳細に観察するとおもしろいことがある。
市と町が合併して旧市の人口の倍近くになるなんていう新しい市もあったり、合併して市になっても３万人に満たないとか、飛び区（離れ小島）になっていたりとか各行政がどんな思惑で絡み合っているのかも想像して見るとおもしろいとおもう。そんな内容の資料まで載っていたとしたらもっと評価を上げてもよかった。
