イギリスやアメリカで販売するための本なのですよね、この本？ だからだと思いますが英語が「普通の英語」です。つまり変に日本人向けの英語に加工されてはいません。だから少し英語を読みなれている人でないと十分に楽しめないかもしれません。童話の英語版ならわたしでもチャレンジできるかな、というような軽い動機で挑戦すると辛くなる可能性が高い(?)でしょう。英語初心者の方はお気をつけ下さい。本自体はいいですよ。

「あらしのよるに」の続編です。いや、続編というよりも、この２冊でひとまとまりの作品といってもいいでしょう。

英語を母語とする人向けに翻訳されており、読むのにはそれなりの英語力が必要です。特に、オオカミのしゃべるセリフは、原文のニュアンスを使えるために意図的に崩した言い回しになっていてました。動名詞、現在分詞の -ing は、最後のgが落ちていますし、単語のつづりも「教科書として正しい」ものにはなっていません。くだけた発音をそのまま表記していて、代名詞 my, your が me, yer になっていたり、「仲間」という意味のありふれた単語 fellow も、なまって feller になっていたりしました。

いずれも訳者が勝手に作ったつづりではなく、大きな辞書なら「非標準」とか「視覚方言」という注とともに掲載されている表現なので、そんなに変ではないですが、少なくとも初級の学習者向きではないと思います。たまたま feller には fell（木を切り倒すという意味の動詞） + er（行為者） の形として、「木を伐採する人」という意味もあったりするうえ、作品の舞台は山の中ですから、ぼんやり読んでいると勘違いするかも。しかし、オオカミは「仲間」とどこかに行った話をしているのであって、きこりとどこかに行ったわけではありません。

原作がなまった言葉を使っているのに標準英語にしてしまっては、原文の味わいは失われてしまいます。オオカミの、ちょっと頭の悪そうな、でも純朴そうな感じは、こうでないと伝わらないでしょう（崩し方が形式的過ぎないかという気はしないでもないですが）。

よい本なのですが、とにかく、童話ではあっても英語学習者向け初級教材というわけではありません。その点を踏まえた上で読んでみるなら、得られるものはいろいろあると思います。

原作に英訳がかみ合っていないところが頻出。本当に原作を読んで英訳したのか？　これが、原作の内容をうつしていると英語圏の人が思ったら、「うーん、残念！」原作者に悪いと思うよ。
