著者は著名な古生物学者でドーキンスの｢利己的遺伝子｣やら進化心理学を批判した本となっている．しかし悲しいことに，この本はドーキンスの利己的遺伝子を全く誤解してその誤解した説明を批判することに終始している．

確かに一部のマスコミ等で○○の遺伝子が発見されこれですべてが説明できるかのような誤った見方が多いことに対しての批判としては意味があろうが，それにしてもこれだけピントがずれていてはどうしようもない．「利己的｣という言葉の響きからどうしても意図的なものが頭から出て行かないらしい．また最終的な複製効率最大化に向かって進化するということが｢生物はセックスのために生きている」ということと同じだと誤解してしまっている．

いずれにせよ進化心理学を理解するには全く不向きであり，どう誤解されることが多いかについては有益な本であるといえる．

なぜ一部の人たちにとってドーキンスの利己的な遺伝子の説明の理解がこれほど困難なのだろう．この困難さには何かヒトの本質にかかるものがあるのだろうかとまで考えさせられ，読むにつれてなんだか悲しくなる本であった．
