＜長所＞
1安い。縮刷版になってかなり手に入れやすくなった。
2初出の用例がいつなのか、年代順に語義が載せられていて、意味の歴史的変化をたどることができる。
3該当する英単語に対応するものが他のゲルマン語、或いは印欧語に見られる場合、(全てではないが)その語も載せてあるので比較しやすい。
4非印欧語起源の単語も載せてある。
5巻末に｢印欧語根表｣と｢語源学解説｣がある。
6言語を眺めているだけでは出てこないであろう、いわば｢雑学的｣情報も多く含まれている。

＜短所＞
1例文が載っていないので、統語的情報が得られない。

＊これはあくまでも専門書。｢語源を知れば単語も記憶しやすい…｣とか考えている人のための本ではない。

本書を使用して5年経ちますが、使えば使うほど味が出る辞典というのが、実感です。三省堂の『英語語義語源辞典』も使用していますが、確かにこちらの方が読んでいて取っ掛かり易いのは事実です。しかし『英語語義語源辞典』では表面的な語源の説明で済ませているのに対して、本書ではもう少し「広く」説明しているケースによく出くわします。例を挙げます。excelという単語。英語語義語源辞典』では「ラテン語excellere(=to raise up:to excel)が古フランス語excellerを経て中英語に入った」とあります。対して本書では、同様の説明に加えてcellere (to raise)とhill(丘)の関連も指摘しています。確かに表記方法は取っ掛かりにくいですが、説明内容は深いと思います。できれば両方を併用することをお勧めします。

「縮刷版が刊行されて本当に嬉しい」、まず、これが正直な感想である。
もとより９７年版の刊行直後から、欧米で刊行された実に様々な語源辞書や研究文献を丹念に読み合わせ、その単語の初出年代、語義変遷、原語への遡及などを要領よく網羅していることで評価の高かった辞書であったが、いかんせん少し高額であった（それに携帯にも不便であった）。

廉価になりコンパクトになった同書を改めてひもとくと、意外に雑学的な記述が多いことに驚かされる。つまりは、語彙の歴史を知るという“引く”要素だけでなく、“読める”辞書でもあったということに気づく。

縮刷版とはいえ７千円強もする辞典であるが、英単語に興味のある人なら絶対に損した気分にはならないハズ。むしろ「これだけの情報量では安いくらい」と思うに違いない。英語の語源に関して、現行辞書の中でベストの書であろう。
