それまで辞書を引いても載っていないことが当たり前だった単語をいくつか引いてみた。全部載っていた。類語、同意語などが豊富。語源もある程度確かめられる。固有名詞も多い。“超人ハルク”まで載っている辞書は他にないと思う。 買ってから一度も本棚にしまったことがない。いつでも手元にある。もう、相棒のような気がしている。

あなたが洋書をよく読む人なら、買う時は革装のものをお勧めします。私のものも革装ですが一年半にして既に背の部分はかなり擦り切れてしまいました。革だと傷んでも味があります。手触りも革の方がいいですし。お昼寝枕としても厚さといい、肌触りといい、最高です。

私は、中世フランス文学作品の英訳、などという相当マイナー（？）な領域
の洋書を読むので、布の名前だとか、普通の英和に載ってない単語にも多く
遭遇します。そこで活躍するのがこの辞書で、とにかく語数が多いので役立ち
ます。ＯＥＤにはやはり届かないが、人名なども豊富で、かんたんな百科事典
としても使えます。

専門書や、小説を読む方で、「普通の英和に載ってない単語があるなあ」
と思われている方に最適です。とにかく意味を調べるものなので、英語学習
には向きませんが。
ただ、収録語数が多いので、「こんな活字が在ったのか！」というほど字が
小さい。仕方ないけれど、見にくいです。そのため電子辞書版を愛用してい
ます。

この辞典の特徴として、コンパクトながら27万語の項目を収録していることが挙げられる。法律、経済の専門用語も充実しており、社会人が仕事で使用するには最も適した辞書であると言える。また、他の辞書に比べて訳語がこなれているのも特徴である。

コンパクトなのに項目が多いという利点の反面として、一つの単語についての説明が少ない。例えば、動詞の用法を調べることには向いていない。ある程度、英語の基礎が出来ている人向けの辞典である。この点、本書が学習辞典ではないということがよくわかる。リーダーズ（readers）という名前の通り、本などを読んで分からない単語が出てきたときのために引く辞書なのだ。

また、惜しむらくは、その値段である。辞書作成には多くの手間がかかっていることは分かるのであるが、どうにかならないものか。でも総合的に見ると、買って損はない辞書である。
