高校の時に奮発して買った革装の第４版以来、２０年近く愛用しています。その後、第６版をシステムソフト電子辞典(パソコンソフト)、SR-8100(電子辞書)と使うメディアは紙から、パソコン、電子辞書へと進化しましたが、中身はいつもこの辞典です。知らない言葉に出会うとまずはこの辞書や英辞郎で調べ、次にMerriam-Webster's Collegiateで語源チェック、LogmanのLDCEやCollins COBUILDでニュアンスチェックしています。革装の紙辞書(第４版)は全く使わなくなりましたが、それでも大切に保管しています。大学受験でマーカーだらけになった革装を読み直し、２０年前と比較してどれだけ言葉を覚えたか確認するのが楽しみです。

さて、第７版ですが、語源好きの私にとっては良い方へ改訂されたと思います。"hydrangea (アジサイ)"を第６版で引くと"ギリシャ語「水の器」"だけですが、第７版だと"hydr(水の)＋angea(器)"と接頭(尾)辞や語幹を分けて説明しています。他の学習英和にも良いものが沢山あるようですが、新英和中辞典も末永く活躍して欲しいと願っています。

現在自分はアメリカの大学に留学しています。
渡米前にジーニアス英和が搭載されている電子辞書を購入して持っていきました。
しかし、その電子辞書では対応しきれず日本に一時帰国した際にこの研究社からの新英和辞典を購入しました。
この辞書は専門用語も多く載っていて、現在、経済学を取っている自分にとってはなくてはならない存在になってます。経済用語などは意味だけでなく、その言葉の簡単な説明なども載っていて非常に使いやすいです。
ぜひお進めしたい辞書です。

今回の第７版は，同程度の語数である同社の『ルミナス英和辞典』とどう差別化を図るかが注目された。同社の『リーダーズ英和辞典』のデータを活用したためか，訳語が以前よりこなれているところも見られる。新語もきちんと収められているが，『ルミナス』より語義の掘り下げの深いところもあり，堅実な雰囲気が感じられる。それゆえか，新しい語義（意味）の採用には慎重な面が見られる。
ただ残念なのは，第６版までたくさん見られた文化情報的挿絵や写真がほとんどなくなってしまったことである。語数を１万語増やすためにはやむをえなかったのだろうし，実用辞典的性格を強めてその点を『ルミナス』に譲った形だろうが，非常に寂しいところである。
