　本書はOECDの国際統一テストで二回連続好成績をおさめた教育先進国フィンランドの、国語教育の要点を紹介した本です。
　読解部門で二回連続首位をおさめたフィンランドの国語教育は、カルタ（カード）を活用したり、作文や討論の雛形を作るという徹底した「型作り」とその反復練習、そして「なぜ？」を必ず問いかけるプロセス重視の論理教育に特徴があると著者は結論しています。逆に日本の国語教育は、例えば作文の書き方も分からない子供に自由に作文を書かせるので、伸びる子は伸びるけど伸びない子は伸びなくなっていると批判しています。各自が書き上げた作文を班で読みまわして批判に晒して書き直し、更にクラスで読みまわして練り上げるフィンランドのやり方はなかなか凄まじいと思いました。
　本書は100ページにも満たない薄っぺらい本ですが、得るものは大きいと思います。フィンランドと言うと縁遠い北国と思いがちですが（そのため本書はフィンランドの写真説明から始まる）、黙りがちな国民性など日本人との親和性があり、班活動などの基本的な教室の風景は変わりません。カリキュラムや「型」のあるなしといったソフトウェアが異なっているだけなので、日本でも十分に採用できると思います。
　フィンランドの教育を通じて、世界中の人と対等にコミュニケーションのとれる日本人を展望する本です。

本書のキー概念は、発想力の養成と練習の重要性です。グローバルコミュニケーションにおいては、論理的思考力が求められるのはもちろんですが、そもそもの発想が貧困では、中身の無い、内容の薄い人間になってしまいます。本書は、マインドマップの手法を使いながら、誰でも簡単に発想力を鍛えられるように仕立てられている点が良いと感じました。また、国際的な学力テストにおいて躍進著しいフィンランドの事情について、著者は練習の賜物であるとしていますが、日本の社会において、物事を繰り返し練習することの重要性が軽視されているのではないかとの警鐘と受け取りました。フィンランドでは、小学生が学ぶ内容を中心に書かれていますが、大人が読んでも楽しい好著です。

フィンランド・メソッドと聞いて興味がわき本書を手にとった。中身は他の学習法の本でも紹介されているようなものであり、目新しさはない。ただフィンランドという国と結びつけられると、凄いもののように思われてしまうから不思議。この本ではいかにフィンランドの魅力を伝えるかにも力が注がれており、大自然を移した写真や行事を移した写真が大きく掲載されている。内容が詳細なメソッドの解説になってはおらず、概論だけ。ページ数も少ない。その割に少し値段が高いような気がする。一度読めば十分な雰囲気だけの本である。フィンランドが好きな人は満足だろうが、学習法を探求している方には不足。
