ＮＨＫ大河ドラマ『篤姫』のもう一人の主人公である小松帯刀（肝付尚五郎）の小伝。正直、彼の名は今日余り知られているとは云い難いが、その人品、活躍振りが一渡り理解できる好著。叙述も平易で、大変分かりやすい。私は、本書で初めて彼こそが公儀政体の樹立を目指した大政奉還の立役者の一人であることを知ったが、同時にその直後の彼の病気による離脱や坂本龍馬の暗殺が、大久保・西郷ラインによる歴史的転轍＝徳川宗家に対する財産返納要求及び小御所会議での王政復古の大号令へとつながっていったことを知り、彼が生きていればその後の日本の歴史も大きく変わったに違いないことを今では確信している。（そのうち、『その時歴史は動いた』の一テーマになること必至と解する。）

大河ドラマ「篤姫」を見て興味を持った人物…。
そう思った方は多いと思う。
本書は帯刀を描いた歴史小説ではなく、解説書もしくは資料本のような物である。
よって、ドラマチックな物語を期待してはならない。

本書を読んで著者の小松帯刀への相当な思い入れは良く分かる。
ただし、取って付けた様なこじつけ的な記述も多い。

幕末〜明治維新の大きな流れの中での帯刀の役割ということで、
どうしても他の英傑の影に隠れてしまっている感もある。
帯刀という人物自体資料が少ないのかもしれないが、
もう少し帯刀中心の物を期待していたのだが…。

また、竜馬との話を一番に持って来たかったからだと思うが、
時系列がばらばらでもう少し順序良く整理していると読みやすいのだが。
著者の思い入れが強いがために、読み物としては荒くなっていて残念な気がした。

結局、著者も大河ドラマにも関わってはいるので、
ドラマを見ていた方が帯刀を知るには良いのかもしれないと思う。

大河ドラマをみて小松という人物に興味を持ちました。

維新の立役者といえば、坂本、西郷、大久保などの名があがりますが、
小松というキーパーソンも確かに必要だったのだなと考えさせられる一冊です。

いわゆる調整役として大いに活躍していたようで、
このような隠れた主人公がまだまだいるのではないかと想像してしまいました。

著者は相当小松という人が好きらしく、褒めちぎっています。
大河とは微妙に設定が違いますが、この違いを比較してみるのも
おもしろいかもしれません。
