小児科医で、聖路加国際病院の副院長という要職にあり、４人の子どもさんのおとうさんでもある
著者。細谷先生が暮らしの手帖に連載していたエッセーが、１冊の本になりました。

子どもの問題は先に大人の問題であり、たとえば子どもの理数ばなれは専門家によると大人のそれが先だったそうです。「お医者さんの書いたエッセー」を超えたものがここにあります。

気持ちがすさんでいるな、と感じた時にそっとひらいてみるといいでしょう。

表紙と裏表紙の何気ないイラストが細谷先生の故郷山形のことかなとふと思います。

子どもの事で悩んでいる方、それ以外の方みなさんが読んで、動かされると思います。

著者は聖路加国際病院の副院長。雑誌に連載した文章をまとめたもの。

　小児科医でもあるので、小児科医の観点から子供と大人について、子供の生活事情について触れたことが多い。示唆に富んでいる。簡潔でわかりやすく、読みやすい。いのちについて考える一助にもなると思われる。

　一人の大人として読んでも、また子供のいる親として読んでも、ヒントの多い本である。
