アメリカ生まれのアメリカ育ちで、もちろん英語が母国語であるこの本の著者デイビッド・セインさん。ところがどっこい、日本語もぺらぺらで読み書きも完璧です。こんなに日本語が上手になるなんて、どのように日本語を勉強したのか不思議に思って、聞いてみると、その答えは「200語程度の日本語を毎日10回読むことを繰り返した」とのこと。
しかも、セインさんの英語学校ではこの方法を日本人の英語学習者にも応用して効果をあげているとのことでした。
この本では、そのメソッドを紹介しています。

そして、これが『英語は10回読めばモノになる!』のメソッドです。
1回目: 知らない単語やフレーズを○で囲みながら、辞書を使わず読む。
2、3回目: あと2回読む。まだ、辞書は使わない。
4回目: 気になる言葉をもう一度○で囲む。2回○がついた単語のみ辞書で調べる。
5、6、7回目: あと3回、できれば大声で読む。7回読んだ後わからない単語をすべて辞書で引く。
8、9、10回目:あと3回、添付のCDに合わせて1分間に200語を目標として読む。

本書にはこの方法を使って実際に読む、練習用英文30例を掲載!　1分間200語で読まれた英文が録音されたCDも付いています。

やっぱり10回読むだけで身につくほど英語は簡単じゃないですね。
わたしは10回読んだ後もCDに併せて何回も音読しています。
意味をしっかり掴んだ上で、声に出して読むのがいい感じです。
書かれている内容も簡単だし、結構続けられると思いますよ。

たしかに、「１０回読めばモノになる」というタイトルは誇張しすぎに思いますが、他の多くの音読教材と比較した場合、量・英文の内容・CDの質などがバランスがとれていて、なかなかいいと思います。文法の知識が一通りある人がチャレンジする音読教材としてはおすすめできます。英語耳の松澤さんが提唱する「Parrots' Law」の教材としても適していると思います。

この本の、冒頭にある英語学習法の説明と、英文の活字の体裁や内容に納得して買いました。
リーデｲングが基本です。文法的、内容的、興味に合えば、その文を何度も繰り返し読むのが
一番効率的に英語感覚、英語力が付きます。そのとき、リズムの法則や発音の基本のだいたいを意識して読めばいいと思います。この方法がもっとも早く、安く、楽しく上達する方法だと思います。あまり神経質にならずに、とにかく分かりそうな英文をどんどん読みましょう。読み込んだ英文はあなたの宝物です。とって置きましょう。日本の英語教育の欠点は、英文の絶対量があまりにも少ないことです。この本は、そういう意味でもっとも信頼のできる王道を説いています。毎日２００語の英文を１０回読めば、それはもう力が付かないほうがおかしい。
そして、この作業は、英文に「来るもの」があれば実に楽しいし、上達している実感がストレートに感じます。はじめてみる英文を自力で頭から分かるかどうかが、本当の英語力ですから。
