外国の方が日本に留学し、直接幼稚園に観察に行き、日本の幼稚園についてまとめていった本です。日本の幼稚園を3つの種類に分類しそれぞれについて分析をしています。そこで「文化モデル」という考え方を用いているところが斬新でした。

「関係重視型」「役割重視型」「子ども重視型」と幼稚園を3つに分類して分析をし、また、「私立・公立」「宗教」などとも関連させてその分析の幅を広げていました。

日本人から見た日本の幼稚園ではなく、外国の人から見た日本の幼稚園、を知ることは、普段当たり前で見えなくなっているものを、改めて気付かされ、今の日本の幼稚園の現状を考えるうえでよいきっかけになったと思います。
