この組曲は池澤夏樹の詩集『塩の道』から抜粋された5篇の詩で構成されています。特に第４曲目「ローラ・ビーチ」が大好きですので少し・・・。

とても抒情的な曲です。過去の多くの合唱曲と比較しても比類のないほどの美しいメロディーとハーモニーを持った曲です。池澤夏樹の詩は、海に関わる言葉を印象的にかつ象徴的に並べ、悠久の時の流れをゆっくりと紡ぎだしています。

自然が創り出す神秘の世界をかくも詩的に表わした池澤夏樹も素晴らしいですが、それに流れるようなメロディーを与えた木下牧子により、ハッとする美しさを持った合唱佳曲が誕生しました。ピアノ・パートがその音楽の美しさに彩りを添え、華やかさを増します。ただ、特に、大切な箇所は、ア・カペラで歌われます。

それにしてもセブンスやナインスといった複雑で上品なコード（和声）進行が本当に聴いていてもうっとりとするくらいですから、歌う人の気持ち良さはまた格別なのでしょうね。

そして、この「ローラ・ビーチ」に続く終曲「ティオの夜の旅」の圧倒的なスピード感と迫力。木下牧子のお得意の変拍子がここでも効果的に使われています。ただ、実際、これをうまく歌いこなすのは難しいでしょうね。この４曲目と５曲目の繋がりと対比がそれぞれの合唱曲の魅力を増加させています。

第１曲目の厳粛な雰囲気を称え持つア・カペラの「祝福」と合わせて、この『ティオの夜の旅』が多くの人に愛されている理由がよく理解できます。

木下牧子の代表作と言ってもいい組曲。木下らしい、動きの面白いメロディーが満載で歌ってよし、聞いてよしです。２「海神」のダイナミックなメロディーは「うたよ」の２「もうすんだとすれば」に通じるものがあると感じますがいかがでしょうか。
詩は海というテーマがあるものの全体として謎めいていて（というか、電波を発していて）、いろいろと歌詞解釈のしがいがあるでしょう。

変拍子＆高速テンポ＆変な歌詞と3拍子そろった終曲「ティオの夜の旅」。
これらを楽しむことをしないで撃沈した多くの演奏がかつて存在した。

この組曲は演奏側の「やり過ぎ」を許す稀有な例である。
特に終曲では多少表現がはみ出た方が曲本来の面白さを引き出す結果となる。
とにかくスピードを殺さない、楽しさを前面に押し出す、
「走るな」「飛び出るな」という合唱の基本に真っ向から挑戦する曲です。
いくら音がしっかり取れて、表現がしっかりしてても変則的なリズムにノレなければ台無し。
ハイスピードをしっかりキープしなければ意味がない。

大事なのは「うまいへた」ではなく「面白いか退屈か」。
演奏の基準としてそんなメジャーがあってもいいんじゃないですか?
