ネイティブさんのコメントは的外れである。第一に、この文法書はそもそも、ＴＯＥＩＣ対策のようなお手軽な英語を目指している人のための本ではない。英米の知識人が書いた知的な原書を読もうとする人、また英米の知識人と対等に対話することを目指す人がひもとく本である。第二に、普通のアメリカ人には、英文法書の価値を判断することはできないと思う。英文法を無意識のうちに身に付けているため、意識的に文法を分析することをしない（また、その必要もない）からである。ところが、ネイティブでない日本人にとっては、文章を正確に読み書きしようとするなら、正確な文法の知識が必要である。そして、知的レベルの高い文章を読み書きするためには、やはりそれに見合っただけの高度な文法の知識が必要である。第三に、ネイティブさんは、日本の古典や漢文に相当する英語は読む必要がないと思っているらしいが、まさにそうした目的で英語の勉強をしている学徒も多数いる。英語を学んでいる者がすべて「実用英語」とやらを学習しているわけではないということをお忘れなく。最後に蛇足になるが、数年前ある雑誌に、プロの翻訳家（英日）を対象とするアンケート調査の結果が載っていたことがある。「座右の文法書は？」という質問に対して、大部分の回答者が本書を挙げていたのを思い出す。もっともなことだと思った。

　超難関校の英語の入試問題でもこの本の内容までは要求されないと思います。私は使い始めたのは
社会人になってからです。例文も豊富で説明も的確です。上級者向けの解説の箇所は読みごたえがあります。英語教師や仕事で英語、特にライティングが必要な方にお勧めします。これまではレファレンス的に必要な箇所を見るだけでしたが、1年前くらいに全ページ通読しました。今後とも座右の文法書のひとつとして頼りになる存在です。

大学入試レベルを越えた内容です。したがって、「受験参考書」としてこの書物を評価するのは適切ではありません（高校英語教員の友人も同意見です）。
さて、このレベルの日本語文法書には、ほかにも「ロイヤル」など数種類あります。その中でこの書物を私が推すのは、「辞典」として使えるだけでなく、「読み物」としても面白いからです。時折顔をのぞかせる著者のユーモアを感じます。
また、引用文献を示しているところなどには、研究者である著者の誠実な姿勢を感じます。
「古い」という意見が出るのは仕方ないことですが、それでも星５つに値する、すぐれた和書の英文法書だと私は思います。
