新約聖書を構成する諸文書のオリジナルの原本は現在見つかっておらず、その代わりに大小あわせて膨大な数の写本が存在します。その写本間の異同を調べ、可能な限りオリジナルの原本の姿を再現しようとする学問が本文批評学です。本文批評学をリードしてきた一人にメツガー教授がおり、その著書『新約聖書の本文研究』（日本基督教団出版）は定評ある教科書ですが、本書はそれをさらに一般読者にわかりやすく、本文批評上の論点を開示してくれる本です。アールマン教授は、上記メツガー教授の教科書の第4版の共著者でもあり、Loeb Classical Libraryに収められた使徒教父文書の校定本の著者でもあります。本書で上げられている本文批評上論争となる異文については、例えば、新改訳聖書の欄外注にもほとんど記されていますが、異文と現在の本文のどちらを取るべきかについてのアールマンの判断については、読者の中には同意できない部分もあるでしょう。しかし、反対意見も紹介されており、異説ながらも公平さを失わない誠実さをもった本だと思います。その意味では、訳文は、ちょっとセンセーショナルさを打ち出しすぎな感が否めない部分もあります。聖書翻訳や聖書解釈に関心のある方にお勧めします。

１７世紀から始まった聖書の主な異文にたいする３００００ヶ所以上の違いの分析の仕方、イエスの生涯を伝える４つの福音書への解説などを含む。おもしろおかしくキリスト教について論じるのではなく、誠心誠意に分析されていて、信仰を持つ者には惑わされない自信がつくだろうと思う。アレキサンドリア・テキストに遡って、比較して、読者対象となった初期キリスト者の立場、考え方なども理解できると思う。悪意や善意で捏造した聖書書記もあるが、訳者もいうように、本書の題名は内容を正しく現していない。原題は"Misquoting Jesus-The story behind who changed the Bible and why" である。

まず、値段が非常に安価であることに、感謝します。やっと、本文批評について、大づかみしていく入門書的なものが、日本語になりました。
それも、これも、ダヴィンチ・コードの余波の一つですので、ダン・ブラウンに心から感謝します。社会現象にもなるような動きが出たので、松田さんも翻訳されたのでしょう。嬉しい限りです。ある程度売れてくれることを期待しています。
さて、神学校で教鞭を執っていますが、今まで聖書学の全体枠をキチンと整理していく文献があまりに少ないので、困っていました。しかしながら、取り分け聖書自体の成立と深く関わる、写本の作成という部分に、こういう形で情報が提供されたことは、本当に感謝な事だと思っています。早速、神学校でも生徒に買わせて、読ませて頂いています。どうしても、英語では距離がありすぎるのですが、松田氏の労苦によって、この内容を、この値段で読める、というのは、キリスト教徒としましても、神学生も、また、教える者としても、実に有り難いことです。
アーマン教授の思いのこもった本、そして、松田氏の翻訳のご労苦に、心から御礼申し上げる次第です。有り難うございました。
