　私がこの本を知ったのは90年代に放映されたTV番組の参考資料として紹介されていたからです。パリやロンドンの街角にひっそり佇む教会の一筋縄ではいかない歴史が素敵です。
　内容は19世紀末フランスの財宝探しとイエスにまつわるミステリーですが、その壮大な仮説自体はキリスト教信者でない私にとって「へー、そうなの？面白いなー。」といった感じです。しかし、本国で発表された当時、20世紀も末の欧米キリスト教社会で大センセーションとなり、関連TV番組に加えられた見えない圧力があったことが驚きです。
　この本の魅力は、キリスト教の異端・カタリ派、メロヴィング王朝、十字軍、テンプル騎士団、薔薇十字団、フリーメーソン、聖杯、錬金術等々、よく分からなくて濃い団体や謎が次々と登場し、写真や図版もたくさん掲載され、大部なこの本を飽きずに読めるその内容の濃さです。
　海賊船のトレードマーク・髑髏とクロスボーンのルーツや画家プッサンの絵の秘密もわかり、すごく物知りになった気分が味わえます。
　カトリックとプロテスタントだけでは語れない西欧キリスト教社会の歴史の底深さに惹きつけられる1冊です。

この本が利用しているフランス国立図書館にある文書は，特殊な属性を持つものらしく，普通には閲覧できないもののようである．このことは，2004年6月27日の朝日新聞の，ダヴィンチコードの書評（青柳いづみこ氏）にも出てくる．しかし，本書の内容は，BBCが少なくとも4回にわたって放送したドキュメンタリーそのものなので，BBCならまさか怪文書などに手をつける筈がないだろう．私はイギリス版(1996)で読んだが，圧倒的な印象を受けた．特に，ワーグナーが素材に使ったパルチヴァル伝説から，聖杯ではなく血統が問題なのだとの結論を出すところは圧巻．イギリス版は印刷がわるく，読み辛いことに注意．

難しい本です。が、本の内容が難しいのではなく・・・翻訳の仕方、日本語に問題があり読みにくいと思います。翻訳家それぞれに文章構成のクセがあるのは承知しておりますが・・・何度も読み返さなければ分からない文章がたくさんありました主語は？？？という疑問すらありました。
他の方も述べられていたように、もう少し読みやすい日本語での改訂版が出るのを希望します。名前、地名、年号・・・と混乱しがちなないような上に読みにくい文章・・・覚悟がいります。が、勉強になるとても良い本であるとは思います。ダビンチコードよりは固い？類の本だと思います。
