コウ チョン・ヘソン
ソウル出身。梨花女子大学英文科2年を終えて、アメリカ・ディッキンソン大学に留学。のち、ボストン大学大学院で社会学博士と人類学博士の学位を取得。さらにハーバード大学とジョージタウン大学で中国語と中国学を研究。ボストン大学、イェール大学、イェール大学ロースクールほかで教鞭をとり、イェール大学比較文化研究所研究部長などを歴任。国立民俗学博物館と国際日本文化研究センターで客員教授としても活躍。1985年、韓国と東洋文化をアメリカに紹介し、次世代のリーダーを育成する目的で東巌文化研究所(ERI、East Rock Institute)を設立。夫君は張勉政権時代、初代駐米特命全権大使、国連代表を務めた故コウ・グァンリム(高光林)博士。苦学生時代に結婚、6人の子どもたちを「徳勝才」の価値観によって韓国系アメリカ人青年たちのリーダーとして育て上げた話で人々に感銘を与えている。韓国国務総理賞、KBS(Korean Broadcasting System)海外同胞賞、アメリカ・コネチカット州知事賞などを受賞

蓮池 薫
1957年、新潟県生まれ。中央大学法学部3年在学中に拉致され、24年間、北朝鮮での生活を余儀なくされる。現在は新潟産業大学で朝鮮語の非常勤講師・嘱託職員として勤務するかたわら、中央大学に復学して法学部に在籍(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

蓮池薫さんがこの本を手がけたというのはなぜだろう。日本的な家庭像やコリアン的家庭像を見てきて、そこに理想の家庭像の一つを見いだしたからだろうか。

著者は、在米コリアンとして出世して、母親としても頑張って、２世の子供たちもそれなりの地位にいるという「良き母」である。正直、子育て理論として目新しいわけでも実用性が類書より特別に高いとは思えないのだけれども、実体験に基づいた理想を求める家庭像に説得力がないでもない。
韓国系であるが故の特徴や、アジア系である故に日本にも通じるところがある所などが役に立つというより興味深く読めるという部分もある。といってもルーツの韓国を尊重しながら韓国の悪い慣習を脱しようとする中で到達した家族論には尊敬に値する部分はある。
