百戦百勝の驚異的な武力をもった無敵の関東武者である平将門に対し，平貞盛は卓越した政治力と謀略を駆使してこれを巧みに躱してゆく．双方とも己の正義のため一歩も引かず，自らの能力を最大限に発揮し，徐々に対立を深めてゆく・・・．
本作品中に登場する人物は，将門と貞盛のみならず，みなキャラクター像がしっかりしている．イメージに多少の誇張はあろうが，本書は歴史書ではなく小説であるため問題は無く，かえって創作の部分が人物を引き立てている．読んでいてわかりやすく，楽しく，気持ちがいい．
上巻で深まった対立が，下巻では手に汗握る直接対決へと導かれてゆくのだろうと予感させる． また読者の手が自然と下巻へ伸びるよう，迫力のあるまま上巻は閉じられている．

平安中期の平将門の反乱はすでに古事記日本書紀によって誇張された千年王朝の天皇制の呪縛を破る出来事だった。平将門は王になる夢を見、そして王朝を作って滅びた。その複雑な事情を明快に書ききって見事である。著者は平安、鎌倉の初期の武者の生き方について大変詳しい。武者という者を理解する入門書としても価値のある作品である。
