タイトル通りに＜怒り＞や＜愛＞が燃えさかる炎のような小説だ。

虐待された幼女をたまたま保護した畝原は、彼女のことが気になり、独自に調査を開始する。その結果、畝原の友人の女性が巻き込まれて誘拐され、事件は意外な展開を見せる。やがて、スキャンダルを隠そうとする北海道警の陰が見え隠れし・・・。

重くて暗い話だが、畝原と周囲の人たちとの関係の温かさが相変わらず救いとなっている。 ストーリー部分は、前半大きく話を広げたぶん、後半の収束を急ぎすぎているように感じられて、やや残念。

話はこれだけで完結しているけど、シリーズの読者対象なので、未読者は辛いだろう。

終盤、読んでいて涙が出た。
許し難い悪は、決して特別な存在ではなく、実は我々の身近にある。それを、見て見ない振りをして生きていること自体が、罪かもしれないと思った。

東直己は怒っている。幼児虐待やスナッフ・サイトなど人間の暗闇が日常を浸食することを。そして市民の盾となるべきの警察の腐敗や不作為に。
しかし主人公である私立探偵の畝原は、スーパーヒーローとして描かれず、いわば徒手空拳で悪夢のような事態に立ち向かう。
その原動力となる不器用ながらも深い愛情に感動する。
ラストは本当に泣ける。
主人公も大事な女性も心身に強烈なダメージを受けるが、そこまで書かざるをえなかったところに作者の怒りと絶望感の深さを感じた。
なお本作は畝原シリーズの1つであるとともに「ススキノ・ハードボイルド」と「駆けてきた少女」と関連するテーマが描かれている。
3作品合わせて読むと、より立体的に話が拡がる。
