　大店の娘だった一乃が、訳あり知性派の鉄幹と駆け落ちして、長屋住まいをしている。愛嬌のある一人息子と、かなりオッチョコチョイの猪突猛進型一乃の、元気な生き様が活写されている。江戸市井小説だが、主人公がはっきりせず、今作では産婆のお加寿が、タイトルに絡んだ重要な役どころを務める。
　抜け荷、にせ金、かどわかしと、かなりの大事件が起き、緊迫感がある。そして、たくさんいる登場人物それぞれの存在感は、見事に描き分けられている。
　ただ、一作としての完成度はやや低く、シリーズものを意識したような顔見世作品になっている。

『損料屋喜八郎始末控え』シリーズと同じく
江戸時代の複雑な貨幣制度を謎解きの中心に据えた
一種の経済ミステリー物。

天真爛漫な日本橋両替商の跡取り娘を主人公に
裏店の面々が知恵と人情で謎を解き、
悪者を追い詰めていくという筆者お得意のパターン。

ストーリー展開が貨幣制度のギミックに流されすぎている点と
個々のキャラクターを生かすためか視点が様々にスイッチする点には
やや難があると感じるが、「江戸」をここまで描ける作家が
そうそう居ないというのもまた事実である。

一乃、鉄幹、幹太郎の親子が暮らす裏店の様子や、一乃が渡世人のところに単身飛び込むところがスカッとした。
さくさく話が進みます。

ただ反面、話の謎ときがヒロインの一乃のインスピレーションで済んでしまうところがどうも・・・もう一つ。。。
なんでもかんでも一乃のインスピレーションで解決してしまうのは安易だし緊張感がうすれます。
それに、鉄幹の知恵者としての立場がないですし。
