ものすごくスピーディーで一気に読めてしまいました。本当に時間がたつのを忘れてしまいました。
火星を舞台にした映画「トータル・リコール」（ディックの原作とは切り離して考えています）は奇想天外な作品でしたが、この小説は映画「トータル・リコール」の痛快さとスピーディーな展開にしっかりと科学考証がされたような快作です。文章も読みやすくて本当に面白かったです。

舞台は、人類が都市を築いた火星。犯人の護送中に、謎の生物に襲われ、相棒を殺され、犯人に逃げられた刑事の主人公は、逆に犯人の容疑をかけられる。単独捜査を開始するも、証拠は消され、命は狙われ、警察上部からの圧力が。そんな彼の前に、「超共感性」という特殊能力を持つ少女が現われ、２人はともに、事件を追うことになるが・・。護送中に襲ってきたものは？その背後にある陰謀は？そして、少女は何者？少女の力は、果して・・。ＳＦ＆（いい意味で）ちょっと甘さのある刑事ものという印象の本です。ストーリーも楽しいですが、それ以外にも、主人公の型破りな行動、主人公と刑事たちの格闘、少女の力の覚醒、火星の都市の仕組み／様子など、読み応え満点です。夜なべして読んで、翌日眠くても、後悔しない１冊でした。

エンターテイメント性を前面に押し出した作品。テンポもよく、ビジュアルが次々に浮かんできます。こ難しい理論や、ひねりすぎて作者自身が混乱しているような本が多い中で一服の清涼剤としての効果大！サスペンスの盛り上げ方もこれがプロとしての一作目とは思えないほどのこなれ方。映画的。多分、たくさん映画をご覧になっているのでしょうね。唯一、惜しむらくは主人公の相棒である女性警察官の殺され方。う~ん、女性にはなんてことないのかもしれないけれど、「いけてるやん、この女警官」と思ってたら、あっというまに殺されちゃう。だから星一個減（笑）。それがまたなんともえぐい描写で。この部分まではとても楽しく読めたのに、しばらく本を閉じました（苦笑）。思い直して、その後は一気に読めましたが（笑）。ともかく。ＳＦ映画、ＳＦ小説、特に海外ものをお好きな方にはぜひ！サスペンスファンにも安心しておすすめできます。この上質のエンタメを内外の優秀な映像スタッフで製作し日本発のＳＦ映画としてスクリーンに登場することを願うのは私だけではないはず。そうそう、これは書いておかねばなりません。本作、「人間」をテーマにしてるってこと。重くなりがちなテーマなのに、こういう描き方もあるんですね。

ボリュームある作品で、かなり様々な要素が入っていたわりには、ラストが少々物足りなかったのはやや残念でしたが、久々に読んだＳＦ作品としては面白かったです。
