　吉永さん家のガーゴイルも12巻が出まして、作中の年月も気づけば和己たちがもうすぐ卒業という時期となりました。
　第6巻からずっと微妙な関係が続いていた和己と桃ですが、ちょっとしたことから喧嘩になり、和己の同級生の範太と桃が急接近して、それを見た和己は精神的に大ダメージを受けて、そんな状態でセンター試験に臨むのですから当然結果散々たる結果に。更にはそれに範太の壁画制作に降りかかってきたトラブルも絡んで、まるでテレビの学園ドラマのような展開が繰り広げられるわけです。
　何しろシリーズの初期のように、強敵が現れてそれを倒せば解決するそれとは違い、人間関係が絡むことですからガーゴイルもどうすればいいのか分からなくて悩むわけでして、その点ではただ守る以外で街の人たちとの関わり方を模索していた前巻と路線が続いています。その一方で、「人のことを知れば知るほど、我は門番として弱くなる。いざという時に、大切なものを守れなくなるかもしれぬ。そんな迷いが生じることが、我にとって辛い」というガーゴイル自身の言葉に表されるように、門番としての務めを果たせなくなるのではというジレンマをも抱えている訳で、その“迷い”とどう向き合っていくのかが今後のテーマとなりそうです。
　また、この巻のラストで高校を卒業する和己や林吾の進路や、ようやく新展開を見せた和己と桃の関係など、今後目が離せない要素が幾つもありまして、果たして次回以降どう展開するのか期待大です。
　ただ、巻頭巻末マンガで百式の影響か、梨々のキャラクターが妙な具合になってまして、その辺が不安なのですが……
