芸術性の高いマンガというものは、他に幾らでも存在する。だが、架空の戦争を題材として、限界状況の人間の内面をこれほど深く、リアルに表現した作家はこれまで存在しなかった。
BANANA FISHやファイヴスター・ストーリーズなど、戦争を題材にした優れた漫画作品は過去にも今にもあるが、作中の登場人物の想いに対して、あくまで創作上の共感以上のものは抱けない。しかし、この作品で切々と語られる哀しい人間模様は、我々の祖父世代が太平洋戦争で抱いたに違いない「戦争の不条理」をこの胸に呼び起こすかのような真に迫る力を持っている。名もない老人の、「恨みます」という一言が、あまりにも重い。
義務と理想の狭間で苦悩する焔の錬金術師の、優しさゆえに心が壊れていく豪腕の錬金術師の、そして彼らの対極の場所から最も人間の本質を突く紅蓮の錬金術師の言葉の一つ一つが、今を生きる我々に「世界の正義とは誰が判断するのか」と「人間の尊厳と命の価値とは誰が決めるのか」という極めて哲学的で難しい問いを投げかけてくる。

イシュヴァール殲滅戦という名の『戦争』。

常に世の何処かに在り続け、世の何処かで溢れている一つの『テーマ』。
重く、深く、単純でいて、故に何処までも難しい。

この題材をよくもまぁ単行本1冊のスパンで。
さらには各人の感情、正義、主張の在り方に伏線の回収etc,etc。
全てこなしつつ本当によくもまぁ単行本1冊のスパンで纏め上げたものです。

それでいて決して中身は薄くなっていない。
しっかりと感動させられて、しっかりと考えさせられます。

そして本編の重さに比例するかのようにオマケ漫画がカルい。
いー感じに力が抜けます。

「敢えて言おう―――尻である、と」
バカです。

話の構成、物語の流れ。見事、としか言い様がありません。
改めて荒川さんの話創りの上手さに感嘆させられた巻でした。

今回は単行本1冊を使い、イシュヴァール内乱を描いています。
作者自身が戦時中に前線を体験した方々に取材を行い、
それらを参考に描いたのものであるとコメントされており、
いつにも増して「重い」エピソードが綴られております。

登場するのはロイを始め、馴染みの深い軍部の皆ですが、
この巻における彼らは私達読者やエルリック兄弟が知らない、
「軍人」としての姿を見せています。

「国家の軍事兵器」として戦いを強いられた錬金術師。
人を殺してしまう軍医と、人を助け続ける医者夫婦。

アメストリスとイシュヴァラという民族間の紛争を背景に、
悲しみと憎しみの連鎖が引き起こされる「戦争」の現実が
彼らの姿を通して伝わってきます。
いつも読者やエルリック兄弟に笑顔を向けていた
ロイやホークアイの憔悴しきった瞳が彼らの現実を表しており、
初めてその瞳を見た瞬間衝撃が走りました。

また、思惑は違えど前線で術を使う錬金術師の姿がとても悲しく、
改めてエドワードが背負った「国家錬金術師」の地位が
どれだけ重いものなのかも再認識しました。

この作品はフィクションの世界の出来事ですが、
今もどこかで同じように戦争が続いている国があると言うことを
再認識する事が出来る作品です。
