TVアニメ放映終了後初めて、というタイミングで刊行された「鋼の錬金術師」の第９巻です。

この巻では、図らずも主要人物のほとんどが首府セントラルに勢揃い。鋼の兄弟、焔の大佐とその腹心、人造人間s、東国の使者、鎧の元死刑囚etc…。各人の思惑が複雑に交錯する中、次々と知らされる新事実と、次々と起こる新事件に主人公兄弟は翻弄されて…。

この巻も見所は多いですが、個人的には、マスタング大佐が業務中に飲み屋のお姉ちゃんと電話でダベりながら"釣り"をする（？）話がお気に入り。餌に食い付いた"獲物"に対して連鎖的に戦線が拡大してゆく展開の妙は鳥肌モノ。スパイ映画を想起させるクオリティの高さは脱帽モノでした。星は５つ以外つけようがありません。

　彼女ができてラブラブなハボック少尉。思わずニヤリと笑ってしまったが、ヒューズというイヤな前例があるので、あまり喜べない。実際やばいことになってるし。一方、ヒューズの死の真相を追うロイ。彼の動きを封じるために人造人間たちは餌を投げ与えるのだけれど…。これがどう転ぶのやら。とにかくロイとしては、ここらで敵を出し抜きたいところ。読んでる側としても、敵の思惑通りに動かされてる主人公たちを見たいとは思わない。

　バリー・ザ・チョッパーが1つの鍵を握っている９巻で、ようやくロイの部下たちが人造人間たちと接触し、戦闘に入ります。が、途中で終っている！　その終り方が気になる。周到に人造人間たちをおびき寄せたロイだが、はたして人造人間たちの一歩上をいくことができるのだろうか。

　予定通りならば、３月に新巻が出るはず。楽しみだ~。

前巻は新キャラ登場で割とスローテンポ気味に感じましたが、今回はハガレンの持ち味であるスピード感と、心にずしっとくる場面が混在して最後まで息もつかせぬ展開でした。

これまで戦闘の中心はエドとアルでしたが、今回はバリーや軍部メンバーにリン一行も加わり、迫力ある戦闘を展開。一方エド、アル、ウィンリは、ヒューズの死を知り悲しみ迷う。エドがアップルパイを食べる場面では思わず泣けてきました。
さらに久しぶりに登場したロス少尉、今回かなり悪役に徹した(?)マスタング大佐、リゼンブールに向かう少佐とエド、さらにホムンクルス登場でどうなるホークアイ中尉!?・・・次巻が出るまでまた4ヶ月待つのか~という感じですね。

アニメの最終回も個人的には好きでしたが、久しぶりに原作を読んで改めて原作の迫力を感じました。かなり強烈な描写もあり、良いのか?と賛否両論出そうですが、それ以上に今後の展開を期待しているので星5つです。
