失われた自らの肉体を取り戻すため、人体錬成（造成）の手がかりを求めて旅する兄弟の物語、第５巻です。

錬金術の基礎を鍛え直すため、兄弟が最も恐れる「師匠」の下を訪ねる話、そして師匠の前で語られる兄弟の凄絶な過去の話…、がメインになっています。師匠は…これまで折に触れて語られる度に兄弟がビビりまくっていたので怖い人だとは分かってたんですが、ホントに色々怖い（笑）。

この巻でも作者の構成力が光っています。

師匠に会う前に、兄弟が出産に立ち合う話が挿入されているんですが、そこでは兄弟が生命の神秘性とそれを前にした無力感を再認識すると共に、…師匠の「キズ」への暗示となってたりします。
その他にも、読み込むほどに深みが見える珠玉の一品、今回も文句無く星５つで!す。

悲劇の始まりが明かされる、第五巻――

予想外のトラブルに巻き込まれつつ、幼なじみと道を分かち、師匠との再会を果たした兄弟。
そこにあったのは、遠い故郷にも似た疑似家族の風景。
厳しくも敬愛すべき師匠に、言い出せなかった罪のあかしを見抜かれ、兄弟はついに重い口を開く。

幼い彼らが、無邪気で真摯なその願いを叶えるために、最大の禁忌に踏み込んでしまったそのわけを――

これまで結果だけが語られてきた兄弟の「罪」が、初めて始めから全て語られることになる。
物語の流れを少し止めて、じっくりと過去を語り始める筆者の姿勢は見事。

ちなみにここで初登場した恐怖の師匠、素晴らしいです！　一瞬で惚れました！（笑）

エルリック兄弟の過去がいよいよ明らかになる‥‥という第五巻です。わたしが思っていたよりもずっと深い秘密が隠されていたようです。「あれ」ってなんだろう。こうやって、次から次に謎が生まれて、それを暗示する伏線が随所にちりばめられていて、思わずにやりとしてしまいます。

驚いたのは師匠。まさか、こういうお方だったとは‥‥。いや大好きなんですけど。

それからこの巻は四巻から引き続いてウィンリィが出張ってて楽しさ倍増、華やかさ倍増、可愛さ倍増です。エドの銀時計の秘密には、思わずじーんときます。

相変わらず笑いとシリアスを巧い具合に書き分けているなぁと思いました。是非「鋼の錬金術師」五巻をご賞味ください。
