オーストラリアの北、
赤道より少し南に位置する、
品川区とほぼ同じ大きさの「ナウル共和国」の、
嘘のようなホントの歴史を綴ったノンフィクション絵本（？）

著者の古田氏の文章と、「大人たばこ養成講座」寄藤文平氏のイラストがなんともいえないリズムと温度を醸しだし、ノンフィクションながら笑いあり教訓ありと、
絵本や童話が本来持っている本質を見事に表現した一冊。

家族みんなで読んでみてください。
「事実は小説よりも奇なり」が満喫できます。

1. この本は赤道近くにあり、さんご礁に集まってきたアホウドリの糞でできた国、ナウル共和国の歴史が描かれています。京都会議で温暖化で島が沈んでしまうと言っていたあの国です。
2. アホウドリの糞は年月が経つとリン鉱石になります。リン鉱石のおかげで国は豊か。
3. 資源はいつか枯渇するもので現在はほとんどありません。しかし、働かないことが国民性になってしまっています。この国のすったもんだを911事件の前後に分けて描かれています。
4. 文字も大きく、絵で説明されていて絵本みたいです。文章も絵もウィットに富んでいて楽しいです。ナウル共和国に行ってみたいと思わせる一冊です。

~税金ゼロ、学校・病院は無料という、おとぎの世界のような実在の国「ナウル共和国」の歴史を描いた本。文章の簡潔さとシンプルで可愛らしい絵のおかげで、絵本のようにさくさくと読めちゃいます。世界一裕福な国だったナウル共和国がだんだんと困窮していく過程は、まるで、どら息子の成長を見守るかのよう。単純、簡潔、楽観的な政治も、世間知らずなどら息~~子故の振る舞いと、何だか微笑ましく感じてしまいました。ただ、政治をはじめとする奔放な振る舞いのツケは、国家をどんどんと危機に追い込んでいきます。でも実は、本書のこの部分に安心感を感じてしまったり。そうだよね、いつまでもおとぎ話のような暮らしが出来るわけないもんね。
他の国が中世~近代にかけて経験した変革の歴史を今まさに経験しようと~~している希有な国の例として、面白く読めます。~
