　これまで生命倫理上の大きな問題であった「脳死問題」に関する論争は、臓器移植法の成立により一段落したように思える。そして、ＥＳ細胞からの臓器再生が「脳死問題」をまったく過去のものとする時代がいずれやってくるだろう。

　生命科学・技術の進展は、私たちが持つ純粋な問いかけに対し、新たなテクノロジーによる解釈を与えることにより、その問いかけ自体を無意味なものにしてしまう危険性を孕んでいる。

　クローン羊ドリーの誕生は私たちに衝撃を与えた。しかし、なんらかの事情で子孫を残せない人がクローンを作る権利を主張した時、それに対する明確な回答ははたしてあるのだろうか。なんとなく感じる違和感は、数十年後もそのまま存在し続けているのだろうか。イギリスで世界初の体外受精児が誕生したとき、多くの反対派が病院を取り囲んだそうである。しかし、いまや体外受精児は通常のテクノロジーとして認められている。
　著者は「人間は歴史から学べるはずだし、現にこれまでもそうしてきたのではないか。生命科学・技術をめぐる現在の議論に欠けているのは、少し前を振り返るという「歴史的な視点」ではないか」と説く。

　今後も新たに生じてくる生命倫理上の問題を考えるうえで、現段階で整理しておきたい論点が網羅されており、示唆に富む一冊である。

生命倫理を論じる場合、いわゆる「倫理学者」は
倫理学という枠組みの中でしか論じておらず、
失望を感じることがある。
このため、「倫理学側の」議論は、
生命倫理に対していまひとつ有効でない。

逆に、「科学者」も、あくまでも
科学のコンテキストでしか論じない。
いわく、「これは「よい」ことであるから
社会で受け入れられるのが当然である。
倫理問題をクリアして推進するためには、
どのような手続きをとったらよいか」
という文脈でしか論じられない。

しかし「これが「よい」ことなのかどうか」は
科学が判断することはできないし、
またそうすべきことでもない。

この本はこの問題を明らかにする。
このことこそが問題なのだとはっきり指摘する。

「すなわちテクノロジーをめぐる問題としては、
テクノロジー使用の限界についてのものに過ぎず、
「どのような制限条件の下でならテクノロジーを用いることが
許されるのか」という問題構成がとられるのが常である。
捨てられてしまったほかの選択肢は考慮されないし、
そのテクノロジーが背負っている価値観や目的まで
さかのぼって問題にされることはまれである。
そもそも、そのテクノロジーが解決しようとしていた問題に対して、
本当にそのテクノロジーを推進することが最善の方法であるのか
といったことは疑問の外に置かれる。」p.10

このような言明は、ほかの（いわゆる）生命倫理の本には
見られない有意義な指摘である。

たとえば、話題沸騰のいわゆる「万能細胞」および
これを使った再生医療について考える際も
この本の視点で考えることが不可欠であると思われる。
