4.0 out of 5 stars 日本の医療に警鐘を鳴らす作品, 2006/8/4
題名の通り主人公は外科医の当麻鉄彦だ。
兄と恋人を若くして失った主人公は、天才的な外科の技量を持ち、将来を嘱望されるが、大学や研究機関には残らず民間の病院に勤めて、一般の人々の命を救うことを選択するところから話は始まる。
本書の魅力は以下の3点だ。
・作者が外科医だけあって、手術の描写がリアルで迫力がある。人体を切り裂くところを描いているにもかかわらず、主人公の見事なメスさばきは実に気持ちがいい。
・外部からは通常見えない大学病院や、そこから医者を派遣されている大病院の内情が詳しく描かれている。これを読むと日本の外科医の多くが手術経験の乏しい人たちで、医療事故が後を絶たない理由がよくわかる。
・日本のマスコミ（国民全体かも知れないが）のレベルの低さ（興味本位、狭量、ヒステリック、無神経）を改めて思わされる。本書は日本初の肝移植に挑む医師達の物語でもあるのだが、それを阻んでいるのがマスコミであるのがよくわかる。これは実話ではないが、実際にこのようなことは間違いなく起きると思われる。
とにかく、面白いし、日本の医療について考えさせられる作品なので、おすすめできます。少なくとも自分の体にメスを入れる場合には、その医師の技量をよく調べておかないと命に関わることが実感できると思います。
