絵が大判の１ページに１枚ずつです。題名もフランス語表記で日本語の題名が付いていません。絵の横に解説は無いです。評論家による絵の評論もありません。
このため、先入観にとらわれずに絵を鑑賞できます。
私はバルテュスの画集をいろいろ見ましたが、本書が一番いいと思いました。それは、絵を絵として本当に鑑賞できるからです。

バルテュスとはつくづく不思議な画家と思います。
見ていられない程に醜悪で嫌な絵もあれば、
一方、心惹かれる５本指にランクインするような、気になる絵も存在します。
(嫌というのは、あくまで構成ではなくその、表情です)
個人的に受けた感覚ですが、
一人の画家でこれほど極端な絵を描く画家は、私の中では他にいません。

それにしても、実際の生活においては、
人々は様々な表情を見せるものです。
難しい顔をしていたり、ぼさっとしていたり、あくどいことを考えていたり。
道行く人が、皆それなりに整った(？)表情で行き交う絵画の方が
本来不自然であると気づかされます。
絵画自体が、本来現実ではないとしても。

嫌な絵を見るにたえないのは、その表情に、自分に思い当たるふしを
感じるから。
その嫌さに比べれば、争いや幽霊の絵を見ている方がまだ恐ろしくない。。
ある瞬間、自分もこんな顔をしていることがあるはずと
リアルに感じること。
絵に解説はいらないと画家は言ったそう。
気が付けば、鏡のように、絵を見ているのに、自分を見ているような気がし、

また、画集を開いています。
