1934年、スウェーデン北部のヴェステルボッテン地方に生まれる。ウプサラ大学でスウェーデン語と歴史を学んだのち、新聞などで書評を手がける。1961年、作家デビュー。以後、小説や戯曲を発表し、国内外で数々の賞を受ける。ヴァックスホルム在住

菱木 晃子
1960年、東京に生まれる。慶應義塾大学卒業。スウェーデン語を中心に子どもの本の翻訳に活躍。横浜市在住

中村 悦子

とびきりのドキドキと切れ味のいいスリル感。
夢いっぱいの展開に、リアルでシビアな問題が喰いこみ、これは子どもならずとも
ぐいぐい引き込まれる。エンクイストはストーリーテラーだ。
おじいちゃんの長年の願いに、ミーナ（６歳）を始めとする４人の孫たちを巻き込み、
三つ穴山への探検は秘密裡に進められる。
子どもの話を聞かない大人たちが目を三角にして怒っても、それは後の祭り。
標高１０００ｍの山へ、老人と９歳以下の子どもたちと、老犬が登るのだ。
読ませどころは小憎らしいほどに際立ち、物語の力に牽かれる心地よさを味わった。
山に生息する動物たちとの、かくあるべきという接触のしかた。
それと対をなすような、飼い犬の老犬ミーシャの誠実で忠実な働きにぐっとくる。

絶体絶命かというアクシデントと、爽快な結末。
おじいちゃんの子どもたちへの語りかけが、真摯でいい。
子どもたちも、おじいちゃんは話をはぐらかしたりしないことをよく知っている。
きちんとしたことばで伝えられたことは、一生もの。その子がおとなになっても
必ずや胸のなかで繰り返し噛みしめられる命題だ。

この話はエンクイスト自身の体験が下敷きだそうだが、この風変わりなおじいちゃんも
案外、彼自身だったりしてね……。
時間を忘れて読んだ本でした！
